Reflection on Lighting

The lecture on lighting has been very interesting thus far. I always wondered the purpose of all the different position of the lights like when I was being photographed for a yearbook or something. I also never understood the purpose of an umbrella and lighting. It was really cool to learn the logic behind the lighting positioning- like at 5:00 and 7:00. I now understand the purpose of some lighting- like in interrogation rooms when the light only comes from overhead and nowhere else.

When thinking of certain ways to use lighting, I thought of the HBO series 24/7 I had watched over Christmas Break about the Philadelphia Flyers and the New York Rangers. It was 4 episodes but at the end- HBO highlights certain player's faces in close up shots. This can be seen starting at 2:27 in the video below:

HBO used lighting so that the players faces were fully light. I think they were trying to emphasize the players bruises, scars, or missing teeth, and the full-facial helped emphasized this.

Scavenger Hunt

This is my wide shot. It captures the 6000 block of york road- I live on the house to the far right, and the two houses to the left are full of other Greyhound friends.

This is my medium shot. It is closer than the wide shot of the houses- and just focuses in on my house.

This is my close-up shot. It is a picture of my roomate, Mike Hubbard. I tried to keep his shoulders in the shot so that it was not an extreme close-up shot. When I took this picture, he was playing Fifa 2012 and was annoyed I had to pause his game. (hence the facial expression of frustration).
